Mr Thiele's Blog

Week ending 14th July 2017

Dear Parents/Carers

Well, its’ been all go here this week. So much to fit in and so little time!

Summer Fayre Update - from the PTCA

Last weeks Summer Fayre was a huge success, raising a fantastic £951.38! We have had so many comments from parents, carers and children saying how much they enjoyed it, which is always lovely to hear!
We would like to say a massive Thank You to all of the staff and to everyone else that helped on the day, either with setting up or running stalls.
The Paramedics were really impressed with the children's questions and knowledge on first aid, Cornwall Resus's 2 days in school obviously made a big impact on the children! Thank you to Karen Austin for arranging for the Ambulance Crew to be there.
Thank you to Miss Cleaver for organising the Tank. The children got to see this arrive after lunch which was very exciting! Although I think Mrs Kerrison enjoyed it the most when she got to drive it after the fayre had finished!

We hope you have a wonderful summer break.
PTCA

Tuesday and Wednesday evening saw the schools’ summer production of Porridge take place at The Mylor Theatre in Truro College. Those of you lucky enough to have watched it will agree that it was a ‘tour de force’ and quite a magical couple of evenings.
The children performed brilliantly and probably sang the best I’ve ever heard them sing in any production. The play was funny and witty and beautifully executed - comic timing was all. A huge thank you to everyone who helped make the play possible, especially Mrs Varnish and Mrs Sydenham for their excellent directorial skills and of course to all those who took part and showed the very best of Devoran. I am so very proud of you all.

This week has been really exciting for Year 4 who went to The Feock Parish Council to present their Devoran Trail Leaflets that they have been creating this term. After being given a tremendous welcome from several Council Officers who were impressed with the standard of their work, it was agreed that the leaflets should be made available to the local community and visitors to the area. They will be accessible as hard copies and on the websites to download via Devoran Village Hall and The Feock Parish Council Office -Yes, Year 4 are going global!

A massive thank you to Iain MacDonald, Caroline Johnson, Debra Roberts, Debbie Searle, Barrie Thomas, Phil Allen, Richard Brickell and Bob Richards for being massive supporters of our work at Devoran.

Years 4, 5 and 6 spent an amazing day at RNAS Culdrose yesterday, taking part in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) Day. Workshops including talks from pilots, making catapults using elastic bands, spoons and lolly sticks, driving simulators, ‘safety on board’ talks including the life boat and a visit to the Briefing Room to find out about all the helicopters that use RNAS Culdrose as a base. It was, by all accounts, a fabulous day out.

Today the Foundation Stage has been at the beach in Falmouth, travelling there and back by train. A wonderful day was had by one and all. Thank you to everyone who made that possible.

Next week will be a very busy one indeed and remember that we finish school at 2.15pn on the last Friday of term. There will be NO Acorn After School Club on that Friday either. Year 6 have chosen the menu, for lunch on Friday, which will be Hot Dogs, Chips and Beans and Ice Cream for pud.

As always, thank you for your continued support.

Dear Parents/Carers

This year is really flying by; with only 3 weeks left of term there is still lots to fit in and lots going on.

The children had a fantastic morning on Monday watching and being involved in the Image Theatre’s production of The Jungle Book.

Tuesday saw the inaugural School Council Picnic Lunch which was a huge success and great fun.

Wednesday 5 July is our whole school transition day. This is when the children will spend the day with their new class teacher for next year. A letter has gone home this evening outlining the classes for next year.

We would like to welcome back Miss Weller next week who will be returning back from maternity leave and say a huge thank you to Mrs Kerrison for the work she has done in Year 5 this year whilst Miss Weller has been away.

A reminder that the deadline for ordering whole school photos is Monday 3 July and all camp payments are due by the end of this term if you haven’t already paid. Thank you.

Please can all donations for the Summer Fayre hamper be brought into school by Monday at the latest. Your support is greatly appreciated but as it stands we have very few donations. All the money raised at the Summer Fayre goes towards buying new and exciting things for the school and your children. A report from the PTCA is due for release before the end of term explaining how the funds raised from the last 3 years have been spent and the opportunities it has created in school.

Next Tuesday is the final Parents’ Forum meeting of the school year at 5pm in the school hall. The agenda items can be found on the notice board outside school. Miss Lock will also be attending the meeting and is due to be in school on Tuesday and Wednesday.

As always, thank you for your continued support.

Dear Parents/Carers

Thank you to all the parents that turned out for Year 4 assembly to hear all about the fantastic time they had on camp last week. They had beautiful weather and lots of fun!

Year 3 have also been on camp this week at Carnyorth. I travelled over to camp with the children on Wednesday and we had such fun playing Miners’ Cluedo. Mrs Morris then came to join us at around 5pm. I am sure you are all excited to hear about what they have been up to.

A huge well done to our entrepreneurs from Year 5 who took their product, a Cornish themed screen printed bag, to the Farmers’ Market in Truro on Wednesday to sell to the general public. They did extremely well and were completely sold out (90 bags) by midday and made a staggering £300 profit.

Year 1 also joined in the action packed week with an exciting trip to Poldark Mine!

The weather still continues to be very hot so please make sure that children come to school with sun cream and sun hat. We have also had a request from Acorn After School Club asking that all children attend club must bring with them a hat and sun cream as they spent time outside in the playground.

The School Council have organised a picnic lunch on Tuesday 27 June for the whole school so there will be a menu change for this day – cheese and turkey sandwiches; sausage rolls; fruit and veg sticks and ice cream cones – order as you would normally for a Tuesday lunch on Parent Pay.

Friday 30 June – This is an own clothes day; please bring in some form of chocolate for the Chocolate Tombola at the Summer Fayre. Please remember NO NUTS.

Please can any Year 6 children that have previously borrowed a tie from school office please return it.

Dear Parents/Carers

Tonight is a night of celebration for our Year 6 children that are due to receive awards at Truro Cathedral as part of the Truro and Roseland Learning Community Annual Awards Ceremony. Please join me in congratulating not only the children that are receiving awards this evening but also all of the children in Year 6 that have worked so hard.

Miss Lock has had a very successful two day handover and is now making her way back to Bedford. I would like to say a huge thank you for making her feel so welcome over these two days; I know she is looking forward to seeing you all again on July 4/5 for her final two day handover.

Next Tuesday is an exciting day as it is the first whole school photograph in 10 Years at Devoran School. The previous whole school photo was back in 2007 when the school moved up to this new building. Please make sure you are all wearing your smartest school uniform. Please let the office know if you do not want your child to take part – they will be included if the office has not heard from you by Monday afternoon. This photograph will be used by us for publicity purposes and on the internet and you will be able to purchase a print if you wish.

Autograph (Eden Food) will be sending letters out to parents shortly as there are a large number still not logging on to Parent Pay to order their school dinners. There are currently only 7 from EYFS that are using Parent Pay. This is not an optional service. If you need new login details please ask the office.

This half term is very busy with lots of events going on in school. Please make sure that you check the school calendar on a regular basis to ensure you are up to date with all of the information that is on there.

This week we offered our thoughts to those citizens that lost their lives in the recent terror attack in London last weekend and the families that are suffering. The school will continue to take part in these events to ensure we pay our respects. It is not always possible to give prior warning to parents for these events but I can assure you all that it will always be carried out at an age appropriate level for all children.

This month's Donation Day (Friday 30 June) will be supporting Mr Stockley (Esmee’s dad) on his charity bike ride from Mount to Mont to raise funds for Cornwall Hospice Care.  Mr Stockley has also launched a Crowdfunder page with some great rewards for donations including some greeting cards and prints specially produced for the ride. Please check out his page and pick up a reward, such as a two night break for up to 4 people at Bude's only 5 star holiday park Wooda for just £150 (worth £200).  http://www.crowdfunder.co.uk/mount-to-mont-by-pedal-power

Thank you for your continued support and I wish you all a fantastic half term break; I hope the sun continues to shine for us all.

Could the parents of all those children who are Penair School bound in September, please make an appointment with The Key Wear Uniform Shop on 01872 242233 for a uniform fitting. They are taking bookings and would very much like to speak to you.

There are nits in school in all years – please be vigilant and check your child/rens hair regularly and treat accordingly if necessary.

 Whole School Safety Week

This week, myself and Lisa Anderson (Chair of Governors) have had great fun working alongside Tabi and Amanda from Cornwall Resus, teaching the children lifesaving and first aid skills. All years had the opportunity to be hands on, practicing CPR, recovery position and choking. They learnt how to recognise if someone had stopped breathing, how to stop nose bleeds and how to ring for an ambulance! The children were incredible, they picked everything up so quickly and were absolutely buzzing afterwards! Having been a Paramedic for many years, I know how important it is that someone can carry out CPR or any other lifesaving skills before the arrival of an ambulance for a successful outcome to be possible, so I am delighted that the PTCA have been able to fund such an important part of the childrens' education.

Did you know that on an iphone there is an emergency button in the bottom left hand corner that over rides a pin number?? Interestingly, most of the children knew but none of the adults did!

You can find out lots more with regards to resuscitation and emergency lifesaving skills at Resuscitation Council (UK) or let your children show you their new skills!

Dear Parents/Carers

What an action packed half term we have all had. I am so proud of what the children have achieved and how hard they have worked. Well done to everyone!

I hope all the FS parents that could attend the assembly this week enjoyed themselves. I thought they all performed with such confidence and it was brilliant to see what they had been learning about this term so far.

Thank you to the Truro Arts Company for donating a £5 voucher for today’s winner of the recycled boat competition for Donations Day in aid of Mylor Sailability.

Please be aware that nits are resident in school again. Please take the necessary steps to ensure the outbreak is a limited one - check, condition, comb, repeat!

Please can all forms for camp be returned to school on the first day back after half term.

Netball Club for Years 3&4 will commence after half term

Well done to all the children from Year 6 and Year 4 that took part in the Quad Kids over the last 2 weeks. You were all amazing and did yourselves and the school proud!

Dear Parents/Carers

I hope that all Year 2 parents that attended the class assembly on Tuesday enjoyed hearing about the children’s learning experiences; they have worked so hard this half term, as have all the children in the school.

What a miserable week for weather it has been. Please can you make sure that on wet days the children bring their coats to school and when the sun does decide to poke its head through then please bring hats and sun cream.

Residential camp meetings are fast approaching and begin with Year 4 next week. Please try to attend the meeting as it will give you a thorough understanding of the camp itinerary and the staff will be able to answer any questions you may have.

Information regarding class teachers for next academic year are being finalised and will be sent out after half term when we have appointed a new teacher to take over from Mr Williams next year. Thank you for your patience and understanding with this situation.

Another reminder to all parents, please log into your Parent Pay account and sign up. All years, including FS and KS1need to sign up for lunches, regardless of whether you have a free meal or not.

Thank you to those parents who registered this week, just over half the school has now signed up. It is imperative that all students, who have a school lunch, are registered.

If your account is in arrears letters will be coming home today from Autograph. You will not be able to order your child/rens meals in advance until you have cleared the debt. This might explain why some families are experiencing difficulty ordering meals in advance. If your child/ren do not take meals that have been preordered, because they have been away from school unexpectedly, then your account will not be debited with that day’s meal payment.

If you need to make last minute use of the after school club and haven’t already booked in, I have arranged with Liam Hoban, owner of Acorn Sports, to make last minute bookings by phoning and leaving a message on the following number: 07486562568. The after school club leaders will check the phone each day when they arrive at school in the afternoon so they know who will be attending.

Today I am travelling to London to carry out a thorough risk assessment for the upcoming residential trip for the Year 6 children so I will see you all on Monday and I wish you all a fantastic weekend.

Thank you for your continued support.

Dear Parents/Carers

A huge congratulations to all of the Year 6 children for being such superstars and giving their all this week for their SATs tests. You are all amazing and have worked so hard this year; every one of you has given 100% and that is all you can ask of yourself. Please have a fantastic weekend; get outdoors, do your favourite things and enjoy yourselves. We are all very proud of you!

Anyone that saw me on the gate this morning will have seen that I could hardly contain my excitement about going out with the FS class on their weekly Fresh Air Friday trip. I am sure the children will fill in all the details but we had an absolute blast: we learnt about cows; we went pond dipping; we went hunting on the beach for crabs amongst the seaweed and then we all had a big race up the hill as we made our way back to this bus. J

If you wish to pass on any comments, positive or constructive, regarding school policy or practice then you can send them to the chair of the Parents’ Forum via email to parentsforum@devoranschool.co.uk

A polite reminder to all parents using the school lunch service run by Autograph, please log into your Parent Pay account and sign up.  All years, including FS and KS1need to sign up for lunches, regardless of whether you have a free meal or not.

Only half the school has signed up thus far and it is imperative that all students, who have a school lunch, are registered.

If your account is in arrears, and letters will be coming home shortly from Autograph (Eden Food Services’ new name) if you are, you will not be able to order your child/rens meals in advance until you have cleared that debt.  This might explain why some families are experiencing difficulty ordering meals in advance. If your child/ren do not take meals that have been pre-ordered, because they have been away from school unexpectedly, then your account will not be debited with that day’s meal payment.

The after school club leaders will check the phone each day when they arrive at school in the afternoon so they know who will be attending.

This may sound like a strange request but please make sure that your children come to school with sun hats and sun cream as well as coats (on cold or wet days) due to the strange weather at the moment; we take them outside in all weather conditions.

Letters for camps went out this week please make sure you have checked though the information and are aware of the essentials list. If you have any queries about payment for the trip then please contact the office.

I wish you all a fantastic weekend.

Thank you for your continued support.

Dear Parents/Carers

I hope you all had a wonderful Easter break and enjoyed the beautiful weather; long may it continue into the Summer Term.

I have both some exciting news and some sad news to start the new term. I would like to offer our congratulations to Mrs Eva who is expecting her 3rd baby later this year.

On a sadder note, Mr Williams will be leaving us at the end of the Summer Term. Mr Williams has recently been successful in applying for a teaching position in China. This is an incredible opportunity for Mr Williams. I know everyone will be sad to see him leave Devoran School but I hope that you can join me in congratulating him and wishing him an exciting adventure next year.

The Spring Disco was huge success last night. Thank you to all the staff members that gave up their evening to help out and ensure the children had a wonderful time and thank you to the group of parents that helped to organise and help out with the event. Your support is greatly appreciated.

This term is very exciting one with residential camps taking place after half term. If you have any concerns or queries then please drop into school and talk to your class teacher. If Year 6 have not already done so, please make sure that your slip for the London trip is handed in on Monday at the very latest.

Well done to all the children that took part in the biathlon for the Cornwall School Games today. You all did yourselves and the school very, very proud.

The next Parents’ Forum meeting will take place on Tuesday 2 May; if you have any agenda items you wish to be discussed then please see one of the Parents’ Forum reps who will pass it on.

If you didn’t already know, the interviews for the new Headteacher of Devoran School will be taking place next week and the governing body will communicate with you all once a decision has been made.

I wish you all fantastic weekend.

Thank you for your continued support.

Dear Parents/Carers

For those that attended the assemblies for Year 1 and Year 4 this week, I hope you had a wonderful time hearing about all the exciting things the children have been learning about. The children of Year 4 looked like they had so much fun learning all about fashion through the ages and then designing and making their own fashion products of the future.

Next week we will unfortunately be saying good bye to Mrs Drysdale in the FS. Good luck for the future Mrs Drysdale and thank you for your hard work.

Next Thursday will be Mrs Goodreid’s last day in education as she prepares for a wonderful new life of retirement. Mrs Goodreid has been at Devoran School for 17 years and has given everything she has to offer, every single day of those 15 years. Devoran has been blessed to have had a teacher like Mrs Goodreid. We all wish her the most amazing time on her new adventure.

This week the Year 5 children went to Tregolls School and collaborated on a science project together. They had lots of fun and we received some wonderful feedback for the children. “Please pass on our thanks to the staff and children in Year 5.  We were all so impressed with their behaviour and how well they listened and worked with our children.  They made it easy for them and joined in 100%.  I think we should be proud of all of our children.  Let's collaborate again when we can.” Well done to all of our Year 5 children.

This weekend is the Devoran Flower Show in the village hall. The event begins at 2pm so get yourself down and have a look around. Devoran School is sad to not be taking part this year; the children and staff were very keen to be part of it but we will be back next year and fully involved with the whole event.

Thank you all for making such a big effort for Red Nose Day today. You all looked great and your support and generosity has been fantastic. We managed to raise a grand total of £170.00.

Following the recent Parents’ Forum meeting – I have arranged with Liam at Acorn Sports that should any after school clubs be cancelled at very short notice (this is sometimes unavoidable) that he will provide a 15min window free of charge to allow parents to make arrangements to collect their children. Liam will also be providing the after school club with a mobile phone allowing parents to not have to worry about hitting the 1pm deadline for booking in to after school club. Further information on this will be given shortly.

Next week’s news:

  • No after school sports clubs this week
  • Monday 27  – Netball Tournament
  • Tuesday 28 - FS Assembly
  • Wednesday 29 – Yr 5 Enterprise Day, FS Easter Hunt with Pre School, FS Open Afternoon 2:15pm
  • Thursday 30 – Fish and Chip Lunch and then Easter Hat Parade
  • Friday 24 –  school finishes at 2:15pm for the Easter holidays

I hope you all have a fantastic weekend.

MR THIELE’S HIGHLIGHT OF THE WEEK

Seeing how much fun the Year 4 children have had with their fashion topic this term!

Week ending 24th February 2017

Dear Parents/Carers

Welcome back to school; I hope you all had a great half term!

Thank you to everyone for supporting the new drop of zone on the roundabout in the morning. This new system that we are trialling will not work without your cooperation and I have had a number of positive comments this week so thank you for your support.

RED NOSES are now on sale so please come to the office and pick your nose with our wonderful ladies Mrs Andrews and Mrs Dodd. ☺

Parents’ meetings will be taking place from Monday 6th March so please book an appointment to see you child’s teacher.

Today’s donation day was in support of the fantastic RNLI. Thank you for helping to raise £182.00 for such a wonder cause. Your support and donations are very much appreciated.

Can you please make sure that you return your camp forms to the office. We are not asking for payment yet, this is to establish the level of interest for each residential camp.

Sport news: This week our two football teams took part in a round robin tournament and also had the pleasure of seeing the Premier League trophy and having their photograph taken with it. The children were so excited to see such a prestigious trophy.

The netball team are playing in a high 5 tournament this afternoon and we wish them the best of the luck and hope that they enjoy themselves while representing the school.

Next week’s news: • There is some very exciting news for next week – the new climbing wall is being installed!

I wish you all a fantastic weekend.

Week ending 10th February 2017

Dear Parents/Carers

The minutes of the recent Parents’ Forum meeting will be sent out to all parents this evening for your information.

The children of Years 3/4/5 had a brilliant time on their class trips this week. Year 3 and 4 went to the recycling centre at Bodmin and then to Cardinham Woods while the Year 5 children visited the Royal Cornwall Museum in Truro. Thank you for being great ambassadors for the school.

Eden services are soon to be introducing a new cashless payment system called Parent Pay. This is an online payment system. More information will be available on this soon. This system will also be available for payments at school for school trips, residential trips etc.

Congratulations to all the cross country runners that took part in the qualifying round of the county cross country event. Devoran School took first team place with many children qualifying for the individual finals that will take place in a few weeks’ time.

Well done to all the children from Year 1 and Year 2 that took part in the Multi Skills Festival this afternoon. You were all fantastic and I hope you had a wonderful time representing Devoran School.

A reminder that after half term, the roundabout will be a drop off zone, in the mornings only, for Years 4/5/6. Please do don’t park on the roundabout at all as this will stop the system from working. Please drop your children and then continue to drive on. I ask that this information be passed on to all family members that may also be involved in any morning school runs. This system will be readdressed and evaluated.

School is closed for half term next and reopens Monday 20th February.

Next week’s news:
Half Term Hols; No Games for Life – Tuesday 21.02.17;
No Stay and Play Session on Friday 24.02.17;
Foundation Stage Fresh Air Friday will be in school on Friday 24.02.17 and NOT at Trelissick Gardens as previously planned.

I wish you all a fantastic weekend and a lovely half term
